A backlit membrane switch incorporates illumination directly into the keypad assembly, allowing legends, icons, or the entire panel to glow evenly in low light or dark environments. Unlike non illuminated switches, backlit versions use light guides, LEDs, electroluminescent (EL) lamps, or fiber optics positioned beneath the graphic overlay. The result is clear, legible keys that reduce user errors and enhance the premium feel of the device. Backlit membrane switches are thin, sealed against dust and moisture (IP54 to IP67), and available with tactile or non tactile feedback. They consume low power, making them suitable for battery operated equipment. Customization includes multiple colors, selective zone lighting, dimming control, and even RGB effects.
